In just 70 years, we have gone from producing two tons of plastic per year (in 1950) to more than four hundred (in 2022). Moreover, these figures have accelerated in the 21st century. Since 2000, more than half of the total amount of plastic in existence has been manufactured. If we continue this progression, production is expected to approach 1.5 billion tons by 2050.
Of this enormous total amount of plastic, less than 20% is recycled. It is clear that the great benefits of plastic come with a terrible burden: the associated environmental pollution, which is increasing every day.
